To start with, why is it important to control food portions? Joanna Soh is a health and fitness vlogger who can explain portion control well. In her video, she recommends that you should weigh your food if you really want to lose some weight.

Beginning of your journey…you would like to understand more about nutrition and how much and how big is a portion, weigh your food. Weigh your food before it’s cook. Weigh your food will give you an understanding of how big a portion actually looks like and how much calories you’re actually consuming. Once you know visually how big each portion is, then you don’t need to weigh anymore and trust me, you will not be overeating. You will know how much you are actually putting on your plate.

So how do you measure your food to practice portion control?

Let’s start with carbs. We are required to take about five to eight portions of carbs a day. That’s for women and for men; you can go up to ten portions a day. One portion is also equivalent to one ounce. So what does one ounce actually look like? Let’s start with our bread.  One slice of bread is also equivalent to one serving and one ounce. So if you were to have two slices of bread in the morning…that’s two servings.  And as for your pasta, I’ve decided to use a small bowl here. This bowl is typically used by Chinese, where they would put their rice in. It’s quite a small bowl and this one bowl of pasta is actually two servings and that weighs about two ounces.

Same goes with the rice, it’s about one small bowl and that is two servings as well. This weighs about two ounces…So that’s two servings of crabs already. To gauge the measurement, you can also use your fist. So one fist is equivalent to one serving and one bowl is about two fists. As for your potato, one medium of potato is equivalent to about two servings of carbs…If you want to lose weight, I would suggest that you stick to five to six servings of carbs per day. So let’s say, one slice of bread in the morning…you can have one bowl of rice, that’s two servings and one bowl of pasta for dinner and that’s two servings.

So there you have it. Joanna gives you the basic steps in measuring your food so that you can practice portion control.

It does take some work at the start but after seeing how each food portion actually looks like, you can always make a safe estimate using your fist.

  1. I’ve tried measuring my food before so that I could limit my food intake. It worked but it took too much time to do it. There was no way I could do that everyday, especially after coming home from work. With Nurtrisystem, my food intake is well-managed.
